Sitter/Timer for Manual Kilns

"Manual" Control

  • The Orton Kiln Sitter/Timer is actually a time-proven automatic shut off device. The reason we call the kiln "manual" is because you need to manually turn up the kiln heat during the firing cycle using the zone switches.
  • A pyrometric cone is inserted in the tube assembly of the Sitter. When the cone bends after the proper amount of heat-work an arm moves which releases a weighted trigger which in turn opens the electrical contacts in the Sitter.
  • A timer is used as a safety back up. Once you have a good idea of your firing cycle time you set the timer to be about 15 minutes longer than your cycle is supposed to take.
  • The timer can easily be disconnected if you don't want to use it.
  • The timer is set for slightly longer than the anticipated firing length and turns off the kiln in case the tube assembly mechanism fails to active.

Caution

  • Even with the back up safety we do not recommend - and strongly advise against - operating the kiln unattended. You should be near the kiln when it is supposed to turn off.
