ORTON KILN SITTER/TIMER
All L&L Manual kilns include a Orton Kiln Sitter with the Timer Option included at no extra charge. The timer is an important back-up safety device that will shut the kiln off if the firing time goes over the anticipated time.
MANUAL ZONE CONTROL ON JUPITER & DAVINCI KILNS
Jupiter and DaVinci kilns feature our original manual zone control with an Infinite Zone Switch for each kiln section. This allows you to balance the heat from top to bottom.
HI-MEDIUM-LOW SWITCHES ON DURA-FIRE KILN
These have the advantage of longer life both for the switch and for the elements. Hi-Medium-Low type switches are easier on element life because the elements do not turn on and off. They also allow the use of higher amperage elements than the infinite switches without the use of contactors). There is a sacrifice in fine zone control; however, experienced potters can compensate for this with loading and firing technique.
MULTI-ZONE PYROMETER
The optional Tru-View multi-zone thermocouple pyrometer system allows you to see temperatures in each zone and thus be able to balance the top to bottom temperatures. See the separate tab for “Mult-Zone Pyrometer”. See more information on this under “Control & Thermocouple Options”
ORTON MOUNTING & WIRING
The Orton Kiln Sitter is in a separately mounted box with an air space between it and the kiln for greater longevity. On single phase kilns that are 50 amps or less the power cord goes directly to the Orton Kiln Sitter and the full power is broken by the Kiln Sitter contactor. On larger kilns (J236 and above and all DaVinci kilns and 3 phase kilns) the Kiln Sitter interrupts power to the coils of the power relays. The Doll kilns have the Kiln Sitter mounted in the main control box.
CAN YOU USE AN AUTOMATIC CONTROL WITH A MANUAL KILN?
We do not make this possible on our current designs. It is possible to plug the kilns that are under 50 amps into control boxes provided by third-party suppliers like Orton but we do not support this.
L&L MANUAL KILN MODELS
DURA-FIRE KILNS
Dura-Fire kilns are very simple manual kilns. They feature the older type Hi-Medium-Low turn-up switches and an externally mounted Orton kiln sitter/timer. The construction and element designs are similar to our Easy-Fire automatic kilns with no section jumper cords. These are designed for people who want the utmost in old bulletproof technology updated with more recent durability features.
JUPITER KILNS
All Jupiter kilns are available in a manual version. These are priced as shown. Prices listed in the 2002 Catalog are valid for 2003. You do not need thermocouples for these (so the Industrial Thermocouple option does not apply).
DAVINCI KILNS
All DaVinci kilns are available in a manual version. Prices listed in the 2002 Catalog are valid for 2003. The base kiln price listed is the price of the manual kiln with the Orton Sitter/Timer. The $600 add-for the DynaTrol automatic controller eliminates the Kiln Sitter.
DOLL/TEST KILNS
These are available in manual versions. Note that the price is $150 higher than in the 2002 Catalog. These have their Sitter/Timer mounted in the main control box.
