How do I control my vent fan motor with my DynaTrol?

This is not a standard option on L&L Kilns due to the remote mounting of the vent fan motor. However, it is easily done. If this has been done in the L&L factory, check the wiring diagram for details. If the kiln is equipped with a powered bottom, the fan motor cannot be controlled by the DynaTrol.

  1. First thing is to be sure the size of the transformer is large enough to handle the extra power needed to close the relay. The relay L-G-RL25/12 will be needed in-line in the fan motor power supply to give the DynaTrol some way to turn fan power on and off. Transformer L-G-TR24/00 is only good for up to 3 relays. If there will be more than 3 relays, including the fan relay, then you need transformer L-G-TR24/LG, which is good for up to at least 6 relays.
  2. Next, depending on what makes more sense, decide whether to put the relay in the control box and run the fan motor power through the relay in the control box, OR mount the relay on the fan motor or somewhere near it- in it's own box- and then run a signal wire from the main control box out to the relay.
  3. When you put the relay in-line to cut the power supply for a 120 volt fan you only need to cut the black wire in the power cord. If it is a 220 volt fan you must cut both hot wires.
  4. To control the relay wires must come from Output 4 and Ground and go to the relay's coil.
  5. Once it is all hooked up and connected you must program the DynaTrol to activate the fan relay when you want the fan to come on. This programming is located in the "Hidden Other Menu". To get into the hidden other menu to these settings the kiln first must read IDLE. Press OTHER/ 4/ 4/ 3/ OTHER. The display will read OP A (means Option A). OP A, OP B, and OP C are the three options for controlling the fan motor. OP A means the fan on all the time from when the kiln starts to heat until it is cooled to 150F. OP B means the fan will be on from when the kiln starts to heat until it reaches 1450F. Then it is off while the kiln reaches the top temp and cools down to 1000F. Then it comes on from 1000F down to 150F. OP C allows the programmer to set whether the fan is on or off in each segment of a vary fire program. In OP C the fan is off in an easy-fire program.
